Hi, I'm James. After graduating from the University of Liverpool with a BSc. in Physics, I made the decision to explore the world and moved to China to teach English. After many wonderful experiences in this culturally rich country, I decided to return to the UK to pursue a career in software. Since February 2023, I have been working as a frontend engineer at Dematic, a dynamic multinational corporation specialising in logistics.

In this role, I have learnt a great deal about the software development lifecycle, including the importance of automated and manual testing, pipelines, and code reviews. I have also had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people from around the world, and have learnt a great deal about the importance of communication and collaboration. Utilising a new frontend component framework (Lit) with TypeScript, I have been able to build a number of new components and improve existing ones using best design practices in conjunction with senior engineers.

Outside of my full time job, I often study machine learning. This is a particularly interesting area for me, given my mathematical background, love of data, and the consistent improvements in the field. I have completed a number of projects utilising machine learning, such as a classifier to detect pneumonia in x-ray images, predicting heart disease using common health metrics, and whether applicants for loans are likely to repay. I have recently completed the Tensorflow Developer Certification Examination, and am currently studying for the Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer Examination by improving both thoretical and practical understanding.

In my free time, I enjoy reading and debating about politics and finance. Given my family's background in accountancy, I also enjoy learning more about policies in the financial world, and how to increase the efficiency of earned currency. As I am a fervent debater, these are common topics of discussion amongst my friends and family!
